WORLD ATLAS  There are 2 common issues for this program that are related to the video card driver. Listed below are each problem with it's solution:

Problem/Solution #1: The program starts but then drops back to your windows desktop start screen. This problem is usually related to Direct X and your video drivers.

Please try the following to fix the problem:

For Direct X 6.1 and Higher (If you do not know what version of Direct X you have start here)

1. Click Start / Run.  You will get a dialog box

2. Type in "Dxdiag" into the open box and click OK.

Ø Note if you get an error "Cannot find the file 'Dxdiag' (or one of its components)"  You should skip to the Direct X 6.0 and Lower

3. From the window that comes up choose the "Display" tab

4. In the middle of the screen you should see "Direct3D Acceleration: Enabled".  Click the disable" button and answer "Yes" to any dialog boxes that come up

5. Exit from Dxdiag and try the program again

For Direct X 6.0 and Lower:

1. Double click on the "My computer" icon. From there double click on the (C:) drive.

2. Double click on the "Program Folder" then the 'Direct X" folder

3. Double click the "setup" folder then the icon for Dxsetup in that folder

4. Uncheck the box labeled "Direct 3D Hardware Acceleration Enabled" and click the OK button

5. Try the program again

This will usually work to keep the globe from becoming corrupted as the mouse is drawn across it. In the long run you may wish to update your video driver for the hardware on your machine, and DirectX.

Problem/Solution #2: When you try to start the program a blank error box appears with only the option to click on "Continue" or "Quit".  The blank error box is usually caused because Direct Draw is unable to function correctly.

Please follow these steps to make sure everything is in order.

1. Click Start / Settings / Control Panel

2. Double Click the System Icon

3. From System Properties choose the "Performance" Tab

4. From Performance click the "Graphics" button on the bottom of the window

5. You should see a Slider for "Hardware acceleration".  Make sure it is all the way to the right at "full" if it is not move the slider to "full"

6. Click "OK" then "Close" and "Yes" to restart the computer

If you did move the slider, try the program again. If it was at full please try the following

1. Click Start / Run

2. Type in the box "dxdiag" and click OK

3. From the tabs that come up click the "Display" tab

4. In the direct X features box ensure the DirectDraw is enabled.  If it is not use the "Enable" button just to the right of the words "DirectDraw: Disabled"

Please try the program again, if the problem persists you may need to update your video card driver.
